Q&A:
Why I Support Loras

Dubuque optometrist Jeff Manternach ('03) transferred ownership of his life insurance policy to Loras to benefit students in the future. He continues to gift the annual premium payments due on the policy to Loras. His gift serves as an example for other young Duhawks to give back to Loras.

Q: What inspired you to support Loras with a gift of life insurance?
I was thinking about ways that I could help support Loras on a long-term level. After graduation I was able to make a small monthly contribution, but with credit cards expiring and needing to update that information periodically—or forgetting to and going periods of time not donating—I felt there must be an easier way.

I met with Rob Reinert to talk about my own life insurance and policies I have for my family. Rob mentioned transferring ownership of one of my policies to Loras as a great way to make sure I continued to donate. Annually, I will gift the policy premium payments to Loras, and they will direct those dollars to the life insurance company.

Q: How did your time at Loras College impact your life?
Loras was really the beginning of my adult life. While I could still rely on my family for emotional support, it was the time that I had to figure out how to balance working, school, and personal commitments. It was a time to break out on my own and make new lifelong connections with students who shared many values and were supportive of one another. Looking back, I can still remember how exciting it was to study in the new ARC (Academic Resource Center) versus the dungeons of the Wahlert Library.

Q: What would you say to someone in their 30s or 40s who says, “I am too young to think about life insurance and estate planning.”
When considering life insurance policies, everyone thinks that is something way down the road. While I plan to live a very long life, I know that sometimes that is not the case. This policy is a way I could make a difference to an institution that made such an impact on my life.
